This session group especially aims to gather Korean and European experts for their exchange of opinions/viewpoints and potential collaboration on mechanical engineering fields such as Automotive, Aeronautics/Aerospace, Naval/Ocean, and Nuclear Engineering. Traditionally numerical analysis has been widely utilized for computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, multi-body dynamics, thermodynamics, and so on. With rapid increase of computer hardware capability and advance of computing process algorithm, many complicated and realistic physical model, which were difficult to solve or consumed huge time resource before, are now becoming possible through the aid of advanced numerical analysis, called “in-situ” analysis. This approach becomes more common since it results in more reliable engineering data and even provides cost-efficient way before manufacturing products in reality. In this session, following topics are expected with application of “in-situ” analysis. 1) Multidisciplinary analysis and optimization involving the interaction of different fields, for example, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and thermodynamics. 2) Advanced analytics including uncertainty quantifications, statistical analysis, machine learning and data mining. 3) Conceptual modeling and motional prediction of complex products including aerospace, automotive, satellites, and so on. 4) Systematic modeling and simulation of manufacturing process, virtual testing process, vehicle motion in traffic flow, etc. 5) Pros and Cons of Commercial code versus against open source codes 6) Challenges and Limitations of current numerical methods. From this session, it is expected that latest status of numerical analysis method and its application to various products will be discussed with engineers/scientists working at diverse field. In the definition of Industry 4.0, cognitive robotics coupled with evolutionary AI (Artificial Intelligence) take an important place. For instance, land transportation without a driver, UAV (Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle), in particular, Drones, towards cyborgs - humans integrated with machines, why not? In the space segment side, recent advances in space technology such as laser communication terminal, miniaturization of electronics and systems and electric propulsion are enabling a new type of flexible, compact and agile missions and concepts. Annual growth of 15-20% is expected for the LEO satellite market for the next 5 to 10 years. Also, the launch vehicle market is exposed to strong competition since new players such as private companies are offensively emerging with their launch systems and services (e.g. FalconX) besides the governmental funding based counterparts (e.g. Ariane 6). Additionally, numerous so-called nano launchers are in development (including Korea) to meet the rapidly increasing demand for small spacecraft and make space access as easy as never before. This session aims to present the current state-of-the-art technology and advances in robotics, AI and aerospace technology. Given this, the Society of Naval Architects of Korea (SNAK) and the Europe-Korean Marine and Ocean Engineers Association (EKMOA) are jointly organizing this session in order to introduce and exchange ideas and information in seeking to advance the art, science and practice of naval architecture, marine and ocean engineering. The 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the primary framework for international climate change cooperation. Its overarching objective is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations at a level that would prevent dangerous human-induced interference with the climate system. The Convention is a framework document augmented and updated by subsequent agreements, including the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and the 2015 Paris Agreement. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) has severely affected the Arctic region, causing melting snow and ice. Climate change is, therefore, also expected to change human activity in the Arctic region such as marine exploration and mining activities in the Arctic area. This session will discuss International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions and agenda related to climate change in the Arctic region and the wider global context, including changes in activity in the polar region, as well as related research and international cooperation for environmental-friendly and efficient technical methodologies to reduce GHG emissions. Considering the speed at which climate change occurs with ever increasing global energy demand particularly in the developing countries, many including the industry and governments are increasingly thinking that nuclear power must play more important role for the environment and the humanity. Nonetheless, in some countries, nuclear power is being less promoted than it needs or is even being declined. This seems due in part to the issues related to the economy of nuclear power and nuclear safety associated with the public acceptance. The purpose of this session is to exchange and to discuss information on the status and prospects of nuclear power technology focusing on the nuclear safety and economy as well as national nuclear energy policy. In addition, the session may cover various issues in a wide perspective, such as the evaluation on the role of nuclear power in the reduction of greenhouse gas emission. In this regard, the nuclear energy session will mainly cover two subjects: advances in nuclear power technology and nuclear waste management policy. Additionally, other studies related to nuclear energy in general which are not able to be covered in a limited time schedule can be discussed in poster sessions.

The Korean Government plans to expand the share of renewable energy to 20% (corresponding to 63.8 GW) of its total power generation by 2030. According to this plan, wind energy will increase from 1.2 GW in 2017 to 17.7 GW in 2030. About 12 GW of it will be generated by offshore wind energy farms. The city state Ulsan has initiated the promotion of the construction of a floating wind farm of 1 GW capacity, located 53 km east of Ulsan in the East Sea of South Korea. To benefit from stronger winds for better power generation, the installation will be moved further offshore, where naturally far greater water depths have to be dealt with. In this case, the foundation of the offshore wind turbine will be floating instead of fixed to the seabed. This leads complex motions of the wind turbine. Due to the heavy rotor at the top of the high substructure, a floating wind turbine can get into an unstable state during rough weather conditions and be at risk of being overthrown. There are thus some significant challenges to overcome for the floating wind turbine. A few concepts for floating platforms have been developed which are mature enough to be used for supporting wind turbines. In this session, wind farm developers will present their experiences in projects of building offshore wind farms, including some global players who are interested in the project of the Ulsan floating wind farm. Engineering companies and research organizations will introduce own concepts of their floating platforms. Manufacturing companies like ship builders will present their yards and facilities. Related topics such as wind turbines, ports and logistics can be also discussed. The Korean government is creating basic conditions for the promotion of its offshore wind farms and has promised to accelerate the approval processes. A government representative will introduce regulations and legislation for constructing offshore wind farms and will discuss the incentive system for the offshore wind power. Keywords (

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) of South Korea has announced plans for setting up large-scale offshore wind farms for expanding the offshore wind capacity as part of Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan which is 20% of its total electricity consumption with renewable energy by 2030. In order to meet the plan about 16.5GW will be generated by wind energy. Of this total, 12GW would come from offshore wind energy. There are many leading research institutes, universities, and industries working in offshore wind energy system in Europe. It would be very beneficial to discuss and share the current state-of-the art offshore wind energy technology which can be used for developing offshore wind energy system in Korea. In this session, various technical disciplines for the offshore wind energy system such as very large blade design, generator design, tower design, cables, substructure design including floater, etc. will be presented and discussed.
