As there is greater pressure for sustainable development, the requirements from the built environment are becoming more demanding. There is broad agreement that densely populated urban areas should be more sustainable rural areas. However, whilst over half the planet’s population lives in cities, they account for more than 75% of the consumption of non-renewable resources, causing climate change. Built Environment group will take a new perspective on sustainable built environment and strategical approaches responding to climate change. The sessions aim to bring together built environment professionals, climate and energy researchers, policy experts and government officials to discuss recent research and works. The sessions of the Built Environment will allow delegate to increase their knowledge and skills related to sustainable development, building design and the performance of buildings and materials.

Built environment has a substantial impact on our lives. It contributes to air pollution, water pollution, energy consumption, impacts on human health, and climate change. In response, there are numerous local, national, and international entities adopting green and sustainable criteria for new construction and renovations. The primary objective of this session is to introduce the research and innovations aiming at creating a sustainable built environment that reduces resources consumption and creates better environment for well-being. This session deals with sustainable approaches for built environment by considering technical, behavioural and social issues and by examining how building and urban designs affect human performance and well-being. Therefore, the session will cover the various dimensions of the sustainable built environment such as indoor environment, energy, water, materials, urban design, and management and operations. Potential speakers of the session include researchers, students, architects, urban designers, and industry professionals. This session will consist of five 20-minute oral presentations (including 15-minute presentation and 5-minute discussion). Additional questions and discussions may be continued during the coffee break.

A future city will be expected ‘sustainable and smart’ by the fusion of energy, traffic, health, ICT and so on. The KICT and EMPA, as main organizations of this session, are recognizing these issues as a common theme concerning from building level to urban level. KICT and EMPA will discuss the major future topics in the smart society and a new way for a large-scale collaboration between Korea and EU also will be suggested.
