Chemistry, Materials Science, and Chemical Engineering are fundamental and challenging fields to study and acquire the knowledge to be understood. The fields have inspired and contributed to the emergence of various chemistry-based materials, such as, nanomaterials, biomaterials, electronic/optical/magnetic materials, ceramics, polymers, metal alloys, smart materials, semiconductor materials, and composite materials associating with design of complicated structures through the innovation of technology by the advancements in the study of fundamental science. The knowledge acquired from the studies will greatly impact on our society and coming life. In the sessions of Chemistry, Material and Chemical Engineering at EKC 2019, the current scientific issues that are considered for environment and human being will be discussed with various up-to-date results from studies in the fields.

Since the first discovery of X-ray (or Röntgen ray) on 8th November 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a new era of science has begun. Medical application is one of the most affected fields due to highly transparent property of X-rays. Various unknown structures, e.g. crystals, molecules, and bio & nano materials, have been investigated thanks to reasonably short wavelengths of X-rays. As human’s scientific knowledge has improved, however, demands for better X-ray sources and techniques have been requested. To keep up with these demands, new generation X-ray sources, e.g. X-ray free-electron laser and diffraction-limited storage ring, with extremely high photon flux and ultra-short pulse width have been developed recently. In this proposed program, characteristics of the new X-ray sources, scientific & technical challenges, diverse applications, and scientific issues will be discussed.

This session deals with emerging solar cells such as organic photovltaic cells (OPVs) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which have emerged as a low-cost, thin–film technology with unprecedented efficiency achieved to 15.7% and 23.7% in 2019, respectively. The session explores fundamental studies focusing on the organic and perovskite materials for efficient and stable performance in emerging solar cells, together with the progress of long-term stability and of large-area module fabrication toward the commercialization. This session also deals with artificial photosynthesis system which is the practical way for converting CO2 or raw chemicals to value added chemicals using solar light. The impending global warming has led researchers worldwide to look for ways to carry out carbon-neutral energy production. The development of new emission-free and sustainable technology for the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates through the utilization of solar energy and abandoned carbon dioxide has emerged as one of the biggest scientific challenges facing the contemporary science. In this session, we will discuss a solar light mediated unique artificial photosynthesis system for solar fuel/solar chemical production.

Energy needs of world’s population is increasing steadily as the resources grow scarce. Renewable energy alternatives to fossil fuels are gaining momentum however, the pace has been slow. According to the World Bank data in 2015 the world has obtained 79% of its energy from fossil fuels. Fossil fuel resources are not only getting scarce but their impact on the environment has been devastating. Carbon dioxide is one of the major waste that is created by fossil fuels which acts as a greenhouse gas causing climate mitigation. Carbon dioxide reduction to value added products has been suggested as an alternative to face climate mitigation. This process requires energy and obtaining this energy from fossil fuels would not help the issue. Sun delivers between 1500 and 50000 EJ of energy which is almost 100 times higher than the annual energy need of the whole planet. This energy can be utilized for the conversion of carbon dioxide to value added chemicals reducing the total emission. This session will address the solar energy driven conversion of carbon dioxide to value added chemicals. The session topics will not be limited to carbon dioxide but will address the other alternative reactions like hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution.
